28 February 2010 - Tobin Brothers ACT Men's Pennant Round 5 - Canberra City's resurrection of its Men's Pennant finals hopes continued in all grades today. The No 1 side had another comfortable victory, this time at Norths where they won two rinks (McDonald and A.Taylor) for an overall score of 68-51. The No 2s have climbed off the bottom of the ladder and possibly are now in the top four. They won all three rinks (Gillespie, Trovato and Howse) and won overall 60-54 although it came right down to the last end before the result was certain. The No 5s won narrowly (56-54) at Belconnen despite only picking up one rink (Frank Hornblower). The No 7s defeated third placed Yowani 70-63 at home with Graeme Barrow and Brian Bailey recording rink wins. Brian's win was remarkable, having come back from being down 19-1 mid-way through the match! City only overhauled Yowani in the last few ends.
Next week there are no pennant fixture due to the long weekend. Round 6 will be played on 14th March with the final round robin matches (round 7) on 21st March.

27 February 2010 - Tobin Brothers ACT Men's Pennant Round 3 - The washed out round 3 of the Men's Pennant was played today. Canberra City teams breathed life into their chances of making the finals in all grades, although the No 5 side which had been equal top went down by 1 shot to third-placed Tuggeranong. In the No 1s City recorded a big win at Belconnen (77-39) with Alan Taylor and Kevin Deeves winning their rinks. The 10 points should put them ahead of Belconnen who had been lying in third position. The No 2s finally broke through with a home win against 4th-placed Tuggeranong. Jim Gillespie and Bob Howse had rink wins in the narrow 59-56 win. The No 5s lost by a solitary shot at Tuggeranong with only Frank Hornblower recording a rink win. Back at City the No7s came from well behind to win 67-63 with stand-in skip Graeme Barrow recording a rink win and Ben Rushforth getting a tied rink.
Round 5 of the Men's Pennant will be played tomorrow (28th February) with the No2s and No 7s again playing at home against Belconnen and Yowani respectively. The No 1s travel to neighbours North Canberra while the No 5s play at Belconnen.

7 February 2010 - Tobin Brothers ACT Men's Pennant - Results of round 2 in the Men's Pennant were much better this week with three of the four sides getting up. In the No 1 grade City won 66-49 at Yowani with rink wins to Alan Taylor and Kevin Deeves. The No 2 grade lost in a rematch with Weston Creek who beat us by a solitary shot in last year's grand final. This time the margin was a decisive 19 shotes (70-51) although Dom Trovato's team got up on the last end to win by a shot after leading most of the day. The No 5 grade won all three rinks (Frank Hornblower, Bill Wright and Les Blackley) in its 67-46 home win over Weston Creek. The No 7 grade also appreciated being at home, winning 60-49 over Tuggeranong with Tony Whitty and Brian Bailey recording rink wins. Detailed results are posted on our pennant pages.
7 February 2010 - ACT Women's Triples - The City team of Bev Dowrick, Norma Blunden and Loretta Gillespie lost a thrilling final 22-20 to the Tuggeranong team of Macauley, Potter and Hamilton at City on Sunday. Trailing by one shot coming to the last end it looked like Loretta had done enough to either take the game to an extra end or even win outright but Pat Hamilton played an on shot that took out the City shot bowl. Congratulations both to the Tuggeranong team and to Loretta's team on an excellent match and championship.

Bear in mind that late team changes posted by the selectors may not be recorded here (although we'll make every effort to post them as soon as possible) so the offical version is always the one posted at the clubhouse.
31 January 2010 - Men's Pennant Season under way - the Men's Pennant season began this weekend but the results were a little disappointing for City. At home the No 1 Grade was on terms with Tuggeranong until about half way through the afternoon when the valley players gradually pulled ahead to win 62-50. Alan Taylor came from behind to win his rink and salvage 2 points for City. The No 2 Grade led until the 50th end against Queanbeyan and like last year's grand final it once again came down to the last heartbreaking bowl where the Queanbeyan skip (G.Smith) drew a shot to a kitty in the ditch to get them home by two shots overall (58-56). Bob Howse was the only rink winner for City. In the No 5 Grade City had a solid 15 shot win at Queanbeyan with Les Blackley recording a 15 shot margin on his rink and Frank Hornblower getting up by a shot. Bill Wright lost a very tight third rink by only one shot. The No 7 Grade travelled to Norths but came away with only one rink - Tony Whitty getting up by a shot. They lost 55-77 overall.
31 January 2010 - Canberra City Four just misses ACT Finals - Loretta Gillespie's team (Loretta, Bev Dowrick, Norma Blunden and Wendy Small) had a solid run in the ACT Women's Fours championships held this weekend. They lost their semi-final by just one shot. Full results are on the Bowls ACT website.
